Bark Series - Helene Sobol Photography Collections

BARK SERIES

My first photographs of bark featured close-ups of a eucalyptus, with a display of colors I had not seen on a tree before, and a palm where the leaves came together in a particularly eye-catching V-shape. The bark in both trees offered not only striking colors and bold shapes, but also a variety of intricate textures - an irresistible and magnificent photographer’s canvas!

GREAT BLUE HERONS OF STOW LAKE

During the pandemic, I became increasingly fascinated by the Great Blue Herons that I observed while walking my dog around Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. I began to carry my camera with a 300mm lens to capture these beautiful birds in their nesting habitat and in various locations around the lake. While many of the nests were hidden behind branches, luckily some of them offered a good view and, during a six month period, I documented their life cycle…

Thornybush Series - Africa

THORNYBUSH SERIES

The Big Five – lions, elephants, leopards, Cape buffalos, and the endangered rhinoceros – were all on display during my African Safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve in South Africa. Thornybush was also home to giraffes, cheetahs, hippopotamuses, zebras and wildebeests inhabiting the open landscape defined by dry bush and small lakes. As we roamed by jeep on rough dirt roads into the bush in search of these often elusive animals, the safari provided many thrilling moments.

NORWAY - MOODS & MEMORIES

From Stavanger, the city of my birth in the south, to the Lofoten Islands in the north above the Arctic Circle, The North Sea and the many fjords on the west coast have made boating and fishing an important part of the Norwegian culture and economy. This is a selection of photographs taken during my many visits there over the years that bring back memories and tug at my heartstrings.

SVALBARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION TO THE ARCTIC

Seeking to capture polar bears in their natural habitat, I signed up for an expedition to the Arctic with National Geographic. The small ship with only 150 passengers was built to go into icy fjords in search of wildlife. During our one-week circumnavigation of the island of Spitsbergen in the month of July, we encountered rough and frigid weather and ice-covered fjords and inlets, challenging conditions that are typical in the far north.

Venice

VENICE - DREAMS

There is no other place that so combines the world of reality with the realm of enchantment. A magical setting with gondolas floating on the canals serving as streets, beautiful buildings dating back centuries, many of which were built with exquisite architectural details and painted in a variety of warm hues - this is my vision of Venice in all its beauty as well as its state of decay.

“Always looking for special moments and unique compositions, I want to capture a mood in time and place. Whether abstract or representational, I enjoy recording the moment when light, form and composition merge to create a captivating image.”
