HELENE F. SOBOL, Photography
Fine Art and Limited Edition Prints
Always looking for special moments
and unique compositions.
I want to capture a specific mood
in time and place.
Whether my subjects are
abstract or representational,
colorful or monochromatic,
near my home or traveling
throughout the world,
I enjoy recording the moment when
light, form, and composition merge to create
a captivating image evocative of a place,
a memory, an experience, a feeling, or a desire.

Helene was born in Stavanger, Norway, a picturesque port surrounded by a landscape known for its breathtaking fjords and majestic mountains. At the age of five, her family moved to Oslo, where, in the winter, she often skied to school. During her teenage years, her family lived in the outskirts of Paris, exposing her to a different culture with its richness in art and architecture. During this time, she traveled throughout Europe, taking in the beauty and history of ancient cities, museums, cathedrals, and castles, as well as regional landscapes.
She was drawn to photography during this time and developed an interest in travel photography. After returning to Stavanger where she received her high school diploma, she studied in England and France. Later, while working for the Norwegian State Department, stationed at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels, she met her future husband, Sam Sobol. They subsequently moved to Honolulu, where the tropical beauty of the islands offered new photographic opportunities, followed by San Francisco where she has resided since 1974.
Having begun her studies at the University of Oslo and continued at the University of Hawaii, she received her B.A. in Art History from UC Berkeley. She also took photography classes and learned darkroom techniques. In 1979, she opened Images of the North, a gallery specializing in Inuit (Eskimo) art. During the ensuing two decades, she devoted herself to the gallery and to her family, raising two children.
Helene’s photography is versatile and includes people, animals, architecture, landscapes, and close-ups of nature. Her images are evocative and timeless, expressing special moments that reflect moods and feelings. Inspired by the beauty of nature, her images often reveal details that make for compelling and painterly compositions, some naturalistic, some abstract.
Helene embraces digital photography which offers her the immediacy of this medium and the opportunity to compose, edit, and express her personal vision. Her giclee fine art prints are produced in open and limited editions.
